My PB + J

Happy 3rd Birthday, Sweet P.

Sweet baby girl you are three today! The years are flying on by and it’s crazy how much of a little lady you are turning into. You are such a firecracker, though most days we are so exhausted by the time night falls we wouldn’t change a single day. Your personality is radiant, you love helping others (especially your little bro) and you’re already wise for your years. You undoubtedly inherited your old soul from us. You spend your days whipping up crazy imaginary baked goods, serving me pink red sparkle tea, singing Taylor Swift from the top of your lungs asking for it to be, “louder…louder…no, higher!” If you had it your way you would survive off of lollipops and popsicles but then there are days where you wake-up asking for frozen green beans. You’re still a lover of anything food related but typically request lunch at Panera for broccoli cheese soup. The cuddlebug in you is what we look forward to and we love when you asked to be “sqqeezed” but not too tight. You love to sing, point out shapes wherever you see them within nature, count and recognize the abc’s. Each day we are reminded how blessed we are to call you our daughter. We continue to talk about your future and the person you are becoming. We love you peanut, happy third birthday.

birthday party date

On Saturday we had a birthday party to attend. The party was for my high school friend, Tawny’s four-year-old daughter, Mary. I had not seen Tawny since her wedding six years ago, which just seems crazy because it was like no time had gone by at all. For my gift to Mary I baked her Hello Kitty themed cupcakes. Since I had been up late and then woke-up fairly early to take a class at The Dailey Method I decided to only take Payton to the party. While I felt guilty for leaving the little guy at home with daddy I knew it would be good for Payton to have a solo mommy trip.
When we arrived at the party I quickly caught up with Tawny’s family, setup the cupcakes and Payton was swiftly whisked off by Mary. They were so cute together, holding hands, sharing toys and enjoying fluffy pink cotton candy before any of the guests arrived. They soon moved on to the huge blow-up water slide and slowly Payton moved to the pool as she was outnumbered by fifteen or so four-year-olds. We enjoyed lots of skittles, a cheeseburger, a cupcake and then we left the party after dealing with the 100º+ weather for three hours.

We chatted, we sang and mostly enjoyed one another’s company. We made a quick pit stop in Temecula to meet my sister to look for our wig pub crawl ensembles. Payton loved walking around the mall without the stroller, without her brother and pretty much just like a big kid. We held hands and went up and down the escalator a half a dozen times before looking for outfits. She would giggle and give her fashionista opinion on my fickle ideas for the LMFAO inspired wig crawl this weekend. The best part about the day was that there wasn’t any breakdowns when asked to leave the party, mall or Hobby Lobby. She went along for the ride and we enjoyed ourselves. We were gone for over eight hours and at the end of the night she asked for me to come lay with her. Of course I couldn’t resist one last snuggle for the day and then she squeezed me a little tighter and said, “mommy, thank you for today. The birthday party was so fun. I love you.” I love these moments and I will cherish them. It isn’t everyday we get solo mommy/daughter dates.

Payton loved picking clothes out for me. She is my biggest fan as I am hers. Above she is trying on the dress she wanted me to purchase.

potty time

it’s safe to say that ms. payton is officially potty trained. we have been down a long road of “training” and when i say that i mean we started right around 18-months, she was doing great and then the lil bro arrived. she wanted to be in diapers like her brother, and honestly, who blames her?  my goal for her to be potty trained was my birthday but instead i got it as an anniversary gift.

for us, waiting until she was ready was the key. luckily, her best friend, charlie, just finished potty training a few months ago so she wanted to be like him. the night before we started we took a trip to target to let her pick out the panties she wanted, a package of (princess) tangled. we already had about ten pair at home so adding this large package gave us enough stock to get through accidents. she was so excited to have her own special underwear. the key to potty training is to make sure your child feels special and important. here is what we did to ensure this training stuck forever:

– let your child pick out their own underwear. i had purchased a few packs and she was interested in them for a bit but her picking them out made it more fun.

– payton was over her training potty (we had the ducky potty by fischer price that would sing “woo-hoo!” and then a chime after going. it was great but she out grew it while we tried over the past year) so we got the child seat for our regular toilet. this step made her bathroom seem like her big girl potty. i recommend this.

– create a potty rewards jar. i asked payton what type of candy she wanted in her special potty jar and she chose m&m’s. i bought two large bags of m&m’s and a glass jar from target. we also picked up some dum-dum lollipops.

– one package of pull-ups. i clearly indicated to her that these were only allowed for nap and nighttime. stick to this.

once we had all this ready it was monday and we started our morning as usual, except i took her diaper off forever and we headed to the potty. she went pee-pee and then chose her undies for the day. after breakfast i waited ten minutes and then started asking if she had to go. for the first few times i had to make her go to get used to it. when she would go i would scream, give her a high-five, we would call daddy and she would run to her potty jar to pick out two m&m’s. the first day seems like all your doing is asking, “do you have to go potty?” day two we had a few accidents but it’s going to happen. don’t get mad at them. day three we were out and about. we got to target and headed straight into the bathroom, success! we made it through the store and then met a friend for lunch and she told me she had to go, success again. as each day passed it seemed to get easier. we had created a routine including funny sayings to get the pee-pee to come out. this was exceptionally helpful when she was fighting going. during the week she made a comment that the pee-pee was in her booty so i played off of that and when she was sitting down i would say, pee-pee, where are you? and payton would laugh and say, “it’s in my booty mommy!” well, come out, come out! and as soon as that was finished it would and she would scream with excitement. i truly believe that the reason it worked this time was the excitement. her cousins were cheering her on, which is huge because all she does is talk about them.

the ultimate reward for going both #1 and #2 in the potty is a solo trip to disneyland. my nieces and nephew had the same thing so we are continuing this with payton. it adds to excitement and ultimately more bribing. whatever works, works.

if you are out in public and the potty seems scary like it did to payton make it fun. i would ask her if she wanted me to go first. i wait for her to walk out of the stall before i flush the toilet because the sound was what was so scary. she loves seeing what type of soap they have (color, smell, foam vs. liquid) and the type of towels. it’s all a game.

if you recently potty trained what worked best for you?

update on #1

i haven’t written about child numero uno in a long time, don’t worry, she’s still here and as sassy as can be. this girl definitely knows what she wants when it comes to anything in her daily routine. she’s picks out her outfits, picks out a matching bow and puts on her shoes. her new thing at nap time is putting on jammies, she has to pick them out, if she does not approve she throws a fit. she wakes up playing peek-a-boo, gives a big “good morninnnnng, mommy and buddy” gives us kisses and moves on to mickey mouse clubhouse with her chocolate milk in hand. yes, she has to have chocolate milk, if you give her plain milk, we get a “no want it” as she walks to the refrigerator opens the door and hands you the hershey’s syrup and says, “i sqeeeze it”. a little drizzle and our morning is off onto the right foot. she’s still loving her pancakes and waffles for breakfast, occasionally dry shredded wheat, weird i know, or eggies with cheese. when it comes to food she still loves everything, especially the veggies. if you ask her what she wants for lunch she will usually reply, mac ‘n cheese, “chicken fil-a”(chick-fil-a), “cheeseburgur” or a chicken roll aka turkey and cheese roll-up. she loves playing with her brother, playing her “ahhh-dude” and peek-a-boo games. she asks to see gigi, tessa, janelle and charlie on a daily basis, saying how she loves them and that they’re her best friends. she also goes on and on about how she loves her cousins and wants to go to school with ethan and makayla. at bedtime she has a whole routine to avoid closing her eyes. she gets her bath, she watches an episode of strawberry shortcake or my little pony, milk in hand and then they whiny games start. “mommy. i got eyelash” then rubbing her nose, “need an issue (tissue) mommy”. after all the games she finally falls asleep and our day is over. there is so much that goes on with her everyday to where i wish i could just bottle her up and record everything she says because half of the time she gets me going with her humor and sayings.
* “mommy, where is my pink jellies?” at home baby girl. “oh no…my toes are sad [insert pout and cheesy grin]”
* watching paula deen she says, “is that grandma?”
* “no shoosh me mommy, i shoosh you”
* “no take-a picture of me! stoooopppp mommmmyyyyy!”
* walking into victoria’s secret she exclaims, “mommy! are those boobies?!”then laughs hysterically.
* walking into our room she lifts up her shirt and asks, “mommy, do you love my boobies?”see a trend here?
* “is that you?” is said after she toots and burps every single time.

and when she really doesn’t want me to take a picture she does this. payton, i hope when you’re a teenager you get embarrassed by this. i love you peanut butter pie.

Payton’s Birthday

We surprised P this year by decorating her bedroom for her to wake up to. I had a different vision but as I was shopping at Target into the 11 PM hour I spaced and only grabbed one bag of balloons. Jim and I wished the entire floor was covered but honestly that bag of $1.99 balloons was the best gift and form of entertainment. I love the way it turned out and she was so excited! It really got her to understand that it was her birthday and how special she is. The video below is long but it’s more for the grandparents & family in New Jersey :::waves hi:::

While she played with the balloons I whipped up her fav eggies with cheese and she got a yummy pink sprinkled donut from Peterson’s. We put in a candle, again, to make it more special and for her to understand the birthday concept. We sang happy birthday and then she went to town on that scrumptious piece of fried dough.

I don’t know what’s going on with her newly found cheesy grin

After we took on more than the daily caloric intake we headed to Seaworld where we spent a few hours. We braved the dark skies and the little bit of drizzle. After Seaworld we went home for naptime and I made some cupcakes and cleaned the house.

After naptime we gave her another gift (new sparkle shoes) and headed down to Corvette Diner. We met Geoff, Jinger and welcomed Papa, Grandma, Rosemarie and Ken home from their cruise. I wasn’t sure if P would be interested in all the hoopla but she did and got a little jelly of the birthday girl next to us who got her crazy straw hairdo. She kept saying, “try” and watching all the girls. I guess our server assumed that a two-year-old wouldn’t enjoy a balloon animal or a fun ‘do.

After dinner we headed home for her to open the remaining presents, sang happy birthday for the third time and ate some cuppies. This little girl is so spoiled: a kitchen, multiple pairs of shoes, a wagon, a radio flyer 500, clothes, uggs, and a movie.
