My PB + J

true food kitchen {review & san diego restaurant}

yesterday janelle and i had the pleasure of dining at true food kitchen’s pre-opening in mission valley. i knew by the name and the cameo on this season of real housewives of orange county that it had to be good. the menu is inspired by dr. david weil’s anti-inflammatory food pyramid. the restaurant practices sustainability and believes that simple, fresh, pure ingredients provide the most memorable and satisfying meals. they also follow the dirty dozen and clean 15 lists when purchasing their produce. coming from a restaurant manager this is great to hear especially when dining with my children. the atmosphere caught my attention right as we were greeted. they had a pitcher of their cucumber basil water out for guests to sip on while waiting for a table, and from what i hear from my orange county friends, this is why they keep going back. i was amazed by the lighting details, the plants and most importantly how organic it felt, think anthropologie.

we were seated on the right side of the restaurant, which provided a great view of the floor; i love being able to watch what’s going on around me, again, the inner manager. our sever, angela, arrived and began explaining beverages and we quickly chose a glass of their house wine, haras chardonnay. it was crisp and refreshing for an early afternoon cocktail. we chose the caramelized onion tart as an appetizer to share. let me just begin by telling you that the flavor palate of: smoked garlic, black figs, caramelized onions and gorgonzola on crispy flatbread sealed the deal for me. one of my favorite flavor combinations, ever. neither of us could decide if we wanted a salad or an entrée so the trainer quickly chimed in letting us know that we could both choose a half salad and share an entrée. janelle chose the sashimi tuna and i, the chicken chopped. we both loved our choices and it was the perfect portion for lunchtime. soon after our plates were cleared our entrée arrived, the all-natural steak tacos. the steak was tender, the avocado fresh and the side of anasazi beans were delish. as if all this food wasn’t enough we decided on the light and lemony almond olive oil cake for dessert. everything we ate was fresh and you could taste the quality behind every dish. true food kitchen is definitely my new go-to spot with girlfriends and the family for quality food and outstanding service. i cannot wait to take payton to try the kids menu.

(smoked garlic, black figs, gorgonzola)

the chopped chicken salad
(cranberry, local dates, jicama, manchego, farro, marcona almonds & champagne vinaigrette)

true food kitchen will be open to the public on monday, july 2nd. they have locations in arizona and california. if you have a summer vacation planned in san diego i urge you to add this restaurant as a go-to spot.

dirty thirty.

prepare yourselves for a picture and over sharing overload.

we began our drive out to las vegas early thursday morning. we stopped for breakfast, then a trip to the bank and then another to target. we were like kids in a candy store in target because we didn’t have either child freaking out. it was bliss. we made it out of target and then headed straight to vegas but it wouldn’t have been right if we didn’t stop in baker for a potty break. shortly after noon we arrived, registered, and headed straight to our room at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. we quickly put on our swim wear and met janelle and nelson down by the pool. we didn’t waste more than ten minutes before we had a cocktail in hand. we hung out by the pool for a few hours and then had a quick happy hour before napping. blissdom, yet again. after nappy time we got dressed and met my sister, brother-in-law, janelle and nelson down in the lobby and took cabs to grand lux and then an ankle breaking walk to go see absinthe. if you have a vegas trip planned anytime soon you need to book tickets for absinthe. the most raunchy, laugh-out-loud, cirque-esque type show i have ever seen. i am still laughing about the gazillionaire and penny. go see. after the show we walked across the street so i could play my first hand at black jack, let’s say i suck and yes, my first hand at thirty is pretty comical.

ready to tackle my last hours of my twenties

on my birthday, friday the twenty-second, we met my sister and brother-in-law for breakfast and then met nelson and janelle down by the pool. we quickly made our way to the lazy river, got bored, and bought inner tubes. it was relaxing but not relaxing enough until i had a 151 rum runner in hand. then let’s just say melissa got a tad bit, err, a lot tipsy. after four hours we were done with the pool and made a quick wardrobe change and headed to the mall with my sister so i could look for new sunglasses. it was a comical drive, trying to talk to our relator, making a call to spain all while drunk. the mall came and went (with new sunglasses of course) and then we picked up my brother-in-law on the corner, literally. we drove back and had happy hour of coagulated queso fundido, amazeballs guac and an outside quesadilla. another nap took place and then it was time to get dressed for dinner at red square. we had the most amazing dinner, like i could’ve just gone to bed right after it was so good. but that wouldn’t have been fun so we headed up to minus 5 where i put on a white fur and we took shots of patron and a sipped a margie from ice-carved glasses. another spot i highly reccommend in vegas for something non-traditional. we made our way up to MIX, which has the best view in vegas. go. you’ll thank me. after about seven shots, no joke, i was finally feeling good enough to dance. the music and enviornment at MIX is perfect, i am not a club girl, but put me in an ultra lounge and i will stay until closing, which we just about did until my filipino princess of a friend wanted french toast and then we lost her. we went to raffles, a must for us. apparently i was so drunk that i was yelling at a girl next to us and making fun of my hubby for ordering blueberry pancakes. by 4:30 am it was time to call it a night. best birthday ever.

the view from our room

i couldn’t even tell you how far in i was at this point.

i think this was the third to last shot, if that says anything.

we called him pitbull, however, papi chulo might have been equally acceptable. mclovin’ isn’t making an apparence on the blog. sorry ‘nelle.

the end.

the next morning we headed home to what i thought i was going to be a relaxing dinner with my parents and kids but no, my parents decided to throw me my first surprise party. first surprise ever that went over my nosy, know-it-all head. i was stunned and my mom said something to me that i will take with me forever. while i never think i am good enough and that i don’t deserve anything she stopped me and said, that i do deserve to feel special and important  because you only turn thirty once. i might take that statement with me throughout this next decade. this birthday goes down in the books as the most amazing birthday ever.

it’s a weekly thang {weigh-in wednesdays}

well, today officially marks two days from my 30th birthday. if any of you remember when i started my weight loss journey the first of the year you will remember that this week was my goal week. while i met my first weight loss goal of weighing 148 pounds i did not meet my second goal (as of yet) to weigh 139. honestly, i am more than okay with this even though i am sick of being at this plateau. i say this because i finally feel good in my skin. when i look into the mirror i see the old me emerging. while it’s a more mature, motherly me, it’s a happy place. i tell myself on a daily basis and am reminded by strangers how great i look for having two children. the skin is still recovering from being stretched like a mo-fo twice and if my saggy pooch never fully goes away that’s okay, i am proud of my battle scars.

as i mentioned in may, i began taking classes at the dailey method. i managed to take twenty-two classes and for that i am proud of myself. i have gotten a lot stronger, flexible (yet not enough) and i can see several changes within my body. i have lost inches everywhere, but more noticeably in my waist (thank you high c-curve) and my butt is sitting up a lot higher. i am sad my six-week membership is over but will be returning as soon as i score another great deal. i guess i will be returning to spin classes and hitting the pavement for some thinking time as i run. for everyone who provided encouragement over the past six months thank you. i still have a weight-loss journey ahead but i won’t be concentrating on it so much daily, i will hit my year-end goal by brayden’s first birthday in october, you just wait and see!

woodland bathroom

out of 2900 square feet one room is done, the kids bathroom. my tactic on decorating this house is tackling one room at a time and that’s how i am rolling. each room is being decorated on a dime, a very small dime. the paint in this room was pre-existing but close to the color i was going to paint it anyhow so we kept it. i purchased the shower curtain last year (after i fell in love with it at my sisters) from target (they still have it in stores on clearance and regularly priced online). it is gender neutral and the colors are fun. i searched for bathroom rules and finally found the ones i loved from niko and lily, i ordered them in the sherbet color palette but replaced the green with brown to match the rug and accessories. i am in love with it and payton loves reading the manners as she potty trains and as she is taking a bath.

paint: behr | cornhusk green – frames: michaels – prints: niko and lily – shower curtain: target – striped towel: target (on clearance in store) – brown bath towel: walmart
