My PB + J

Breast feeding isn’t all daisies and sunshine like I had imagined.

Feeding your child is the biggest responsibility you as a parent have (well, one of them anyway). Immediately after the birth of your child once the goo has been wiped off, limbs have been checked, measured and prodded the nurses place the swaddled baby onto the chest of the mother to begin suckling. For many lucky women the baby latches right on and begins taking in the mother’s first milk. I was lucky to have experienced this, it was a great moment, I had woken up from the anesthesia and found Jim bringing the baby right over and the nurse placing her onto my right breast. She latched, she drank, and we were in business. Through our three-day stay at the hospital Payton would feed as any newborn would, however, one night she whaled and whaled and whaled. My nurse came in to take her to the nursery for her nightly check-up and brought her back thirty minutes later to tell me that my once 8 pound baby had lost 8 ounces. My initial thought was that all babies lose some weight before leaving the hospital, so what’s the big deal? The nurse then began to tell me that I wasn’t breast feeding her correctly, well, excuse me, I am a first time mommy, so how the hell am I supposed to know that I am feeding her incorrectly. We’re getting the correct amount of pee-pee and poopy diapers so how is she not getting enough food? This was the last we heard of this issue at the hospital.

On December 22nd we went to our first pediatrician appointment where Payton was measured and weighed. Her stats were: 6 pounds 14 ounces and 19 inches long. First thought, how did my baby shrink 2 1/4 inches and second, that 8 ounces sure turned into a lot more; so much for not having a problem. Dr. Martinez suggested that we begin supplementing with formula over the week of Christmas to see if we could get back to her birth weight. It took until her three-week appointment to get back up to 8 pounds 1.2 ounces. Not a big deal, she is growing, thriving and excelling already.
The hospital had given me a breast pump as rental for a month’s use. The first time I pumped I got .5 ounces and this was discouraging. At that moment I realized that this was going to be harder than I thought, but soon went to the message boards to see if this was normal. I would learn that for c-section mother’s it takes a little longer for their milk to come in, taking as much as a full month to fully come in. I would continue to pump, breast feed and supplement. Week four came around and I was so excited to see if my milk was really coming in, so I was making sure that I would breast feed, supplement and then wait two hours to pump. The first time I did this I got 2 ounces! Great news! I was so excited and kept this up for the rest of the day but the results were not as promising. The most I was able to pump for the remainder of the week was anywhere from .25 to 1 ounce. This obviously is not enough milk to provide for my growing baby and proves why she is a hysterical mess while I feed her. I have to be honest here; watching my baby get so emotionally worked-up, pulling on and off, screaming and kicking is the hardest thing I have experienced thus far. I get emotional right along with her. I question myself, my body and how I have failed yet again and just cry while I mix a bottle of formula. Why does this have to be so difficult? I’ve been tested, I get it, but not be able to provide my milk is the most crushing feeling in the world. I am not asking for sympathy, because I know I am definitely not alone on this issue. I just need to get this out because it is killing me. I have tried my hardest for four weeks, two days and have come to the conclusion that my baby will be formula fed. I trust that formula will still provide the nutrients required for healthy development and hope that she has received enough of my anti-bodies thus far to help rid off any illness during the winter months.
An update on Payton’s weight. The last time she was weighed at the pediatrician was on January 5th. Last night Jim weighed her and she weighed in at 9 pounds 12 ounces. These numbers could be slightly different than the doctor’s office but she is obviously getting enough from the formula. At some feedings she is taking in 4 to 5 ounces but mostly she takes in 2 ounces. We are currently using one can of Enfamil Premium Lipil formula a week, thank golly for target coupons and Costco!

One Month Old

Dear Payton-

I cannot believe you have been here for one month already. Time is surely flying by and you are growing like a weed. When you first came home from the hospital we headed out to take you to meet your Great-Grandma and the next day at your day four doctors visit you had gone from 8 pounds to 6 pounds 14 ounces. We were instructed by Dr. Martinez to start supplementing with formula to start packing on the ounces because you were obviously not getting enough breastmilk from me. I had a really hard time dealing with this news; I had already felt like a failure with not being able to have a natural delivery and not being able to watch you enter this world but to have to deal with not being able to provide enough food for you really sent me into a whirlwind of depression. Luckily, we were surrounded by family as we spent your first Christmas up at Grandma and Papa’s house. There you got to meet your cousins for the first time and Ethan couldn’t get over how “cute” you were and kept talking to you in baby talk while rubbing your cheek. I cannot wait until you can interact with them because before you were born I considered them my pseudo children. We could only stay up in Running Springs until Sunday because we had to get you home for a two-week check-up on your weight on Monday morning and by then you had reached 7 pounds 5 ounces. The week of New Year’s the three of us just lounged around the house and got accustomed to being a family and rang in the New Year while laying in bed. Daddy had to head back to work on the fourth of January after having almost three weeks off, you and I were on our own for the first time. On the 5th we headed back to the doctor’s to check your weight again and by then you had finally reached your birthweight plus an ounce. At your appointment I discussed with Dr. Martinez how much you are consuming. If I feed you off my breast for fifteen minutes on each side you are instantly whiny wanting more food, while I am still not producing enough milk you will continue to eat two additional ounces of formula or in the case of just drinking formula you can consume up to four ounces at one feeding. You are also rolling around and “talking” above your age and at day twelve while laying in bed you completely rolled over. You had Daddy and I scared to death and we just looked at each other and said, “we’re in trouble”.
Our dear Pay, can you please act your age? In time you will roll over, lift your head and hold your own bottle but you need to relax my dear baby girl. You already have the patience of your proud mama and beaming Papa.
This month has sped on by and since then this is what you have accomplished:
  • Have visited the mall four times. I know this is silly, but on Day three (our first day home) we hit the mall to finish our Christmas shopping.
  • Met your Great-Grandmother where she called you “her precious baby” and told me that “you do look like me”. We visited her three times in your first month.
  • Had a White Christmas
  • Sleeping for roughly three to four hours (five hours on occassion) at a time at night, we thank you for this.
  • Rolled over on day twelve. Hasn’t happened since, but hey, we did watch you do it.
  • Gave Mommy two real smiles on 1/12/10 at 11:11 AM. The first time I screamed and couldn’t believe it, but then you did it again. This truly made my day and made my heart melt yet again.
  • We had your adorable newborn pictures taken on day eleven. Tessa said you are the longest newborn baby she has ever photographed.
  • Went to your first “bump” get together.
  • Smiled at Daddy on 1/16.

maternity leave bake-off challenge

Well folks, I am giving myself a challenge. It’s not an original concept but I have been wanting to take this challenge for over a year and now that I am no longer pregnant I can actually see it come to fruition. What I am talking about is a cupcake bake-off of my very own that will not work through an entire cookbook like Julie Powell did in Julie and Julia, but rather give myself the ultimate challenge of taking the next 90 days of maternity leave and baking sixty, yes you read correct, sixty cupcake recipes. Some of you may think I am nuts especially since I have a newborn at home to take care of but heck, I haven’t taken it easy one day since my c-section so why not start off 2010 with a bang?

As many of you can imagine, I own almost every cupcake cookbook out there. Where shall I begin? I have baked some interesting little cakes since I began Le Petite Kŭp’kāk
and I am looking to you for some inspiration.

What is your favorite cupcake combo?
Is there a flavor you have never seen and would love for me to bake?

Leave me a comment here or on my cupcake blog with your ideas.

First up: In honor of my fab friends The Boroff’s and Anne Byrn’s Cupcakes! From the Cake Doctor:
Triple Butterscotch Cupcakes.

Keep checking the cupcake blog; I plan on doing some cupcake giveaways throughout the bake-off.
